Build 1.0.57

Gobble gobble! Here’s a turkey-day present to Ziddio users. We just rolled out a new build of the site @ www.ziddio.com. It added a few bug fixes and random features that users have been requesting (like now when you click “More Info” on a video - it doesn’t wisk you away to another page). Play with it, and if you see any weird bugs sprout up please let us know - info@ziddio.com.

Streaming VS Downloading

After much gnashing of teeth and performance testing we’ve made a switch in how we deliever the videos to your web browser. As we developed Ziddio we wanted to deliever a user experience with features that we ourselves would use (duh!) and it puzzled us that other video interfaces lacked some of these features - like REALLY fast video start times and the ability to jump around to whatever part of the video you wanted to (we hate those “watch until minute 2 for the really good stuff” messages, especially when you can’t just jump to the good stuff) so we built our video player to stream video from our servers.

In short we thought streaming = good (for the non-technies streaming basically means we deliever the video as you see it. Start two minutes into a video, we start by sending you the video information starting two minutes in. The alternative is called progressive download, where if you wanted to start watching two minutes in, the file has download from the BEGINING of the video so you have to wait until the download reaches the two minute point before it starts playing. So in short its super efficient and videos play very quickly)

Well in principal streaming = good, but in practice streaming introduced a whole boatload of headaches - especially from users behind certain types of firewalls and specific network connections. So this past week we’ve swapped out how Ziddio delievers videos from streaming to good ole fashioned progressive downloads. Our tech gurus worked overtime and figured out how to make the transition totally seamless so hopefully you didn’t notice anything (well except those who couldn’t view videos before…you’ll now be able to…well…see the videos so thats an improvement).

It LIVES!

We’re up, we’re live and folks are talking!

There’s been a ton of sleepless nights, some serious head scratching and a few profanities shouted (anyone out there who’s had to do browser compatibility testing knows what i’m talking about (although we did get to try the site out with really old versions of Flash - so that was fun in a nostalgic kind-a way)). But the site went live quietly late last week and after a few more bug fixes it went live loudly this past Monday. (And we’re still squashing bugs as we speak - if you do see anything funky and not working the way you expected please let us know info@ziddio.com.)

I say loudly since we got not one, but TWO mentions in the Wall Street Journal this past week! (Including a sweet screenshot on the front page of the marketplace section! (WSJ Article 1, WSJ Article 2) Oh and all the chatter being tracked by digg and Technorati doesn’t hurt either…

A few of us are off to go storm City Hall across the street - there’s a crazy huge Star Wars event taking place (for those of you paying attention its tied into our Join the Jedi Order competition) going on - and there are rumors of a photo opp with Chewie…

Act It On Camera. Stream It On Ziddio.

Hello and Welcome!

Team Ziddio is building a new video platform that will empower you to submit and see great videos, compete in unique and fun contests, and then see it on TV.  Ziddio will not be “yet another user-gen site” (why be copycats - afterall, our plan currently doesn’t involve being sold off for $1.65 billion (although think of all the doughnuts that would buy)).  Our goal is to do a really great job of finding and promoting the best and most creative original user-generated video, highlighting the contributors, and getting it to the TV set.  That’s what we’re working on…

So stay tuned… We’ll be on air shortly…
